Kakopetria

The church with a roof built over its roof.

Kakopetria fills the cool Solea valley with a preserved stone old quarter below Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, one of the ten UNESCO-listed painted churches of the Troodos.

Kakopetria is the highest village in the Solea valley, set where two mountain streams, the Kargotis and the Garillis, join and run on as the Klarios toward Morphou Bay. Its old quarter is a run of two-storey stone houses and wooden balconies along the water, restored and protected as an ancient monument. The forested slopes above hold the painted church that makes the whole valley famous.

Why they call it the bad rock

The name reads as "bad rock," from the Greek kako and petra, and the village keeps two explanations for it. The plain one is the ground itself: hard stone and boulders on a steep valley shoulder. The other is a tradition, not a fact, about a large rock where newly married couples once sat for luck, until the day it is said to have rolled over one pair and left the village its unlucky name. Below the newer streets, Palia Kakopetria is the old stone quarter, a protected ancient monument under the Department of Antiquities since the first houses were restored in 1980. Its close-packed houses, wooden balconies, and repaired watermills line the lane where the Kargotis and Garillis meet, the same water that feeds the Solea valley all the way down to the Morphou plain. The valley's real fame is its painted churches. Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, up the forest road above the village, is the only surviving eleventh-century monastery church of its kind on the island, its frescoes layered over six centuries beneath the steep timber roof, added a century later, that gives the church its name. It shares the 1985 UNESCO listing with Panagia Podithou, a short way down the valley at Galata, so two of the ten painted Troodos churches stand within the same short drive.

Good to know

01

Kakopetria is about an hour southwest of Nicosia on the B9, at around 700 m, so it stays cool when the coast bakes.

02

Old Kakopetria, the protected stone quarter, is closed to cars; park at the edge and walk the lane along the river.

03

Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, the steep-roofed painted church, is about 5 km outside the village and keeps its own opening hours.

04

The old watermills on the river now house tavernas and small hotels; trout is the thing to order.

Asked about Kakopetria

Is Kakopetria good in summer?

It is one of the standard summer escapes from the heat; at around 700 m the Solea valley is noticeably cooler than Nicosia or the coast.

How do I get to the painted church?

Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis is about 5 km outside the village toward the forest; you need a car, and it keeps limited hours, so check before you go.
