About Church of St. Nicholas of the Roof
Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, near Kakopetria in the Solea valley at about 700 metres, is the only surviving katholicon of an 11th-century Byzantine monastery and one of ten Troodos churches on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1985. Its name, "of the Roof", comes from the steep timber roof added in the 12th century to shield the building from mountain rain and snow. Inside, frescoes spanning the 11th to 16th centuries survive, the latest phase dated to 1633.
