About Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis Church
Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis stands about two kilometres southwest of Kakopetria, on the west bank of the Klarios river. It is the only surviving katholicon of an 11th-century Byzantine monastery, and takes its name, "of the Roof," from the steep timber roof built over its domed nave. Frescoes inside span roughly 600 years, giving the interior the character of a museum of Byzantine painting. In 1985 it was inscribed, with nine other Troodos churches, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
