Limassol runs east from its castle quarter and the Marina along the Molos seafront, and throws the island's loudest Carnival and its biggest Wine Festival.
Cyprus's second city and its busiest port, Limassol grew up on the coast between two ancient kingdoms: Amathus, whose ruins sit just east of town, and Kourion, on the cliffs to the west. For most of its life it was a modest wine and shipping port, and it still is, only now the harbour cranes share the skyline with the glass towers along the front and the yacht masts of the Marina. It is the least sleepy city on the island, as much a place people live and do business as one they visit.
