About Panagia tou Araka
Panagia tou Araka stands on the slopes of Mount Madari above the village of Lagoudera, one of ten painted Troodos churches on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 1985. Its murals, completed in December 1192 by the Constantinople-trained monk Theodore Apsevdis, include a full-length Virgin of the Passion unlike the usual shoulder-up icon. Conservators David and June Winfield restored the paintings between 1968 and 1973 for the Dumbarton Oaks research institute.
