About Panagia Trikoukkiotissa Monastery

The Monastery of Panagia Trikoukkiotissa lies in the Troodos mountains, about two kilometres from Prodromos, the highest village in Cyprus. Its name is said to come from the medlar trees (trikoukkies) once growing there. Documented history reaches back to the Lusignan period, and the community had declined by the 18th century, the site later used as a plant nursery under British rule. The restored katholikon, built in basilica style with a steep, wooden-shuttered roof, is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. A women's community reopened the monastery in 1997.
