About View of abandoned asbestos quarry
This viewpoint, near Moniatis in the Troodos forest, looks out over the former Amiantos asbestos mine, once the largest chrysotile asbestos deposit worked in Europe. The mine operated by open-pit extraction from 1904 until it closed suddenly in 1988, leaving waste tips and a large excavated pit across the mountainside. Glass and timber balconies let visitors look safely over the site, and a visitor centre in the old village school at Pano Amiantos explains the geology, as replanting of the old workings continues.
