About Souskiou-Vathyrkakas Cemetery
Souskiou-Vathyrkakas is a Chalcolithic burial ground on a ravine roughly 80 metres deep, about 2.5 kilometres from the ancient sanctuary at Palaepaphos in southwest Cyprus. Dating to the late fourth millennium BC, it is the island's earliest documented cemetery. Excavated across four campaigns between 1951 and 1997, it yielded an outsized grave seven times the size of its neighbours, holding a container carved with what is thought to be the oldest known depiction of a human figure on Cyprus, alongside pins and Erimi-style figurines.
