About Point 6: Sanctuary of Athena
On the summit of Idalion's western acropolis, known as Ambelleri, stood a sanctuary to Athena, whom the Phoenicians identified with their own goddess Anat. The first temple precinct dates to the late Cypro-Geometric period and was enlarged repeatedly through the Cypro-Archaic period before being abandoned around the start of the Cypro-Classical era. Excavated in 1928, the sanctuary once held an inscribed bronze tablet, found nearby around 1850, that is now kept in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.
