About Agios Sozomenos
Agios Sozomenos was a mixed village on the Alikos and Gialias rivers, emptied by intercommunal violence in 1964 and left abandoned since. Its chapel, dedicated to the hermit Saint Sozomenos, occupies a cave 300 metres from the village centre, sealed with stonework after a 1912 British court ruling handed it to the Greek Cypriot community. Fourteenth-century wall paintings of the saint's miracles survive inside, painted over an earlier tenth-century layer since removed to Nicosia's Byzantine Museum, alongside icon niches, a holy-water fountain and burial recesses.
