About Agia Varvara, Nicosia
Agia Varvara village, 22 kilometres south of Nicosia at 311 metres, was originally called Saint George. Local tradition holds that around 620 years ago fire destroyed the village church, leaving only the icon of Saint Barbara intact; villagers rebuilt nearby and dedicated the new church, and the village, to her. Records describe Agia Varvara as a feud under Frankish rule. The church's patronal feast, on 4 December, still draws the community together each year.
