About Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement
Choirokoitia is a Neolithic settlement in a bend of the Maroni river, occupied from around 7000 BC into the fourth millennium BC and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Its people built tholoi, round stone-and-mudbrick houses two to nine metres across, grouped around shared courtyards, and buried their dead beneath the floors. They carved jewellery from local picrolite stone and enclosed the village behind a wall over two metres thick. Five huts and part of the defences have been rebuilt near the entrance for visitors to walk through.
