About Angeloktisti Church
Panagia Angeloktisti stands in the village of Kiti, about 12 kilometres southwest of Larnaca. The present church, built in the 11th century, rises over the remains of a 5th-century early Christian basilica. Its apse holds a wall mosaic from the 6th century, showing the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child, flanked by archangels, on a gold background. Mosaics of this age survive in only a few places, Cyprus and Mount Sinai among them. The church is on Cyprus's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
