About Agios Georgios Ancient Basilikas
On the neck of Cape Drepanon near Pegeia, excavations since the 1950s uncovered a sixth-century Early Christian settlement built around three basilicas. Basilica A, the largest, held a baptistery; Basilica B sat at the foot of the southern slope; Basilica C to the northeast kept its own sacristy, oil press and guesthouse. The settlement flourished under Justinian I and likely served as a stopover for grain ships bound from Egypt to Constantinople. Mosaic floors and rock-cut tombs survive at the cliff's edge.
