About Agios Andronikos, Polis (Cyprus)
Agios Andronikos is a small, aisleless, barrel-vaulted church near the main square in Polis Chrysochous, securely dated to the 16th century by its wall paintings from the Venetian period (1489-1570). Under Ottoman rule it was converted into a mosque, with a room added for Muslim worshippers, and it stood abandoned from 1963. After 1974 a long conservation effort uncovered and cleaned the paintings beneath later plaster, revealing scenes including the birth of the Virgin Mary and Abraham's sacrifice. It now opens to visitors on Sundays.
