About Aetokremnos
Aetokremnos, Greek for Cliff of the Eagles, is a rock shelter on a sea cliff near Limassol, excavated after its 1960 discovery on a British base. Radiocarbon dating puts a brief occupation around 11,775 years ago, among the oldest evidence of people on Cyprus. Diggers found roughly 1,000 Mesolithic flints alongside the bones of more than 370 now-extinct pygmy hippopotamuses and several dwarf elephants, a third of them burned, pointing to one of the earliest recorded human impacts on an island ecosystem.
