About Holy Monastery of St Nicholas of the Cats
The Holy Monastery of St Nicholas of the Cats stands on Cape Gata near Akrotiri, founded in AD 327 by Kalokeros, Cyprus's first Byzantine governor, under St Helena's patronage. A severe drought had let venomous snakes overrun the site, so Helena reportedly shipped 1,000 cats from Persia and Egypt to hunt them, trained to two bells for feeding and hunting. Its chapel dates to the 14th century; abandoned after a 16th-century earthquake and Ottoman conquest, it was rebuilt over the centuries and reinstated by Orthodox nuns in 1983.
