About Xylophagou Tower
The Xylofagou Tower, also known as the Tower of Rigena, stands about 3 kilometres south of Xylofagou village on the plateau of Cape Pyla, around 100 metres above sea level. The Venetians built this round limestone tower in the 16th century as part of a chain of coastal watchtowers: lookouts would scan for enemy ships and light a beacon to warn Nicosia and neighbouring towers. During the Second World War the British reused it to watch for enemy ships, submarines and aircraft.
