About Tamassos
Tamassos was a copper-trading city-kingdom on the plain southwest of Nicosia, prosperous enough by the seventh century BC that Assyrian records name it among Cyprus's kingdoms. Its wealth came from local copper mines, and the site preserves two royal tombs cut into limestone and carved with sixth-century-BC sphinxes and lions, alongside the remains of a Temple of Aphrodite and a shrine to Kybele. Eight modern villages, including Politiko and Episkopeio, now sit over parts of the ancient city, limiting how much can still be excavated.
