About Sotira Ecclesiastical Museum
The Ecclesiastical Museum of Sotira occupies the chapel of Saint George in this Famagusta district village. Its collection includes icons such as a 15th century image of Christ, old printed Gospels, liturgical books, crosses and vessels, and one of only three surviving 16th century portable wooden altars in Cyprus. Next door stands the church of Metamorphosis tou Sotiros (Transfiguration of the Saviour), a single-aisled, vaulted stone building raised over the foundations of an earlier Byzantine basilica. Sotira takes its name from Christ the Saviour.
