About Sanctuary of the Paphian Aphrodite
The Sanctuary of Aphrodite Paphia stands in Kouklia village, where ancient Greeks believed the goddess emerged from the sea. Homer's Odyssey already mentions its altar and sacred grove around 700 BC, and figurines from the third millennium BC suggest goddess-worship here predates the Greeks entirely. Roman emperors Vespasian and Septimius Severus put the sanctuary on their coinage. Tacitus described its cult object as a black conical stone rather than a human statue; worship continued until Theodosius I banned pagan rites in 391 AD.
