About Medieval Castle
Paphos Castle stands at the western edge of the harbour, on the site of a Byzantine fort built to protect the port and largely destroyed by the 1222 earthquake. The Lusignans built two towers here in the mid-13th century to guard the harbour entrance. The Ottomans later rebuilt the structure seen today, using it as a prison and a mosque, before the British converted it into a salt store and it became a national monument in 1935.
