About Pyrgos tis Rigainas
Pyrgos tis Rigainas, Queen's Tower, is not really a tower: excavation shows it to be the ruins of a Byzantine monastery, likely from the 11th or 12th century, with a small church and monastic buildings arranged around a courtyard. Its builders tucked it into a valley out of sight of the coast, a deliberate defence against raiders. The ruins sit beside a reputed 500-year-old oak tree and mark a stop on the Aphrodite and Adonis nature trails west of the Baths of Aphrodite.
