About Profitis Elias Chapel Protaras
The chapel of Profitis Elias stands on a steep hill at the heart of Protaras. Stone-built in Byzantine style, it was constructed in 1984 on the site of a smaller, older Byzantine chapel, and is reached by climbing 153 steps. From the hilltop there are views over Protaras and, to the north, toward Famagusta, the Pentadaktylos mountains and Karpasia. Its feast day is celebrated on 20 July; a small park near the hill offers a place to rest, and trees along the path are hung with colourful ribbons.
