About Panagia Eleousa Church
Panagia Eleousa stands in Pano Panagia village on the southwestern slopes of the Troodos, built in the 14th century and dedicated to the Eleousa of Kykkos, the compassionate Virgin icon venerated at nearby Kykkos Monastery. It is a single-nave "barn-roof" church typical of the Troodos foothills, just 12 by 5 metres with a flat east wall and no apse. Local tradition holds the Virgin appeared to villagers during past epidemics, and to this day the chapel is wrapped in cotton string, a Cypriot folk custom meant to ward off misfortune.
