About Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery
Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery, dedicated to 'Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate', stands at about 820 metres, some 40 kilometres northeast of Paphos near the village of Panagia. Tradition credits its founding in 1152 to the monk Ignatios, who recovered a miraculous icon of the Virgin off the Paphos coast, said to have drifted there after being cast into the sea during the Byzantine iconoclasm. The present building dates from 1770, replacing the modest church a visiting Russian monk found here in 1735. The monastery has produced wine since at least 1751 and revived its winery in 1984; it now keeps about 25 hectares of vineyards.
