About Panagia Chrysopateritissa
The church of Panagia Chrysopateritissa stands about five kilometres northwest of Pomos, in a wooded area below the Pomos dam. It is a single-aisle, vaulted church built in the early 16th century and decorated with frescoes; the monastery around it was founded in 1520 under Venetian rule, its first abbot the hieromonk Thomas, who carried a golden staff, from which the name Chrysopateritissa (golden father) derives. Only the church survives today, restored by the Department of Antiquities.
