About Gialia Monastery
Gialia Monastery lies in ruins in the village of Gialia, a few kilometres inland from the coast near Polis Chrysochous in the Paphos district. Excavation evidence points to a late-tenth-century founding under the Georgian king David III Kuropalates, with later renovations under David IV and Tamar. It held two churches, to the Virgin Mary and later St George, with Georgian wall paintings from the 13th and 14th centuries. Plundered in the sixteenth century, it stood in reduced use until an earthquake finished it in 1953.
