About Bamboulari tis Koukouninas (Golgoi)
Bamboulari tis Koukouninas is a low hillock site just north of Athienou, occupied from around 1650 to 1050 BC. Israeli archaeologists Trude Dothan and Amnon Ben-Tor excavated it in 1971 and 1972, recovering an estimated 10,000 miniature votive juglets, which point to its use as a regional shrine on the route between the copper sources of the Troodos Mountains and coastal trading centres. The later Iron Age settlement of Golgoi is thought to have succeeded it nearby.
