About Throni Shrine
The Throni shrine sits on a mountain ridge near Kykkos Monastery in the Troodos, about 1,450 metres up. During Venetian rule, monks carried the monastery's icon of the Virgin Mary here to pray for rain in times of drought, setting it on a wooden throne, which gave the site its name. The original throne was later replaced by a concrete Byzantine-style building. Archbishop Makarios III chose the site for his tomb, built in 1977, and visitors still tie cloth to nearby bushes as offerings.
