About Church of Saint Euphemianos
Founded in the 13th century by the monk Lavrentios and dedicated to the ascetic Saint Euphemianos, this small single-domed Byzantine church southwest of Lysi once drew crowds on the saint's November feast day. Between 1974 and 1983 its dome and apse frescoes, painted in the 13th and 14th centuries, were stripped and cut into 38 fragments by a Turkish art dealer. The Menil Foundation bought them for the Church of Cyprus and displayed them in a purpose-built Houston chapel from 1997 before their agreed repatriation to Cyprus in 2012.
