The Effect

The experiment begins.

Satiriko Theatro presents, for the first time in Cyprus, The Effect by award-winning British playwright Lucy Prebble, directed by Evita Ioannou.

Connie and Tristan take part in a clinical trial for a new antidepressant. During the experiment, they meet and fall in love. But soon a question arises: are their feelings genuine, or are they the result of the medication? As the drug takes effect, the boundaries between reality and the possible hallucinations caused by its side effects begin to blur. With simplicity, humour and sensitivity, the play explores the nature of love, mental health, the ethical limits of science, and the conflict between scientific reasoning and human impulse.

Written in 2012 for London’s National Theatre, The Effect won the Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Play and poses a compelling question: if science can influence our minds, can it influence our feelings, too?
