Glafkos Kontemeniotis Quartet: ‘Four Lives in Between’.

Four musicians who have spent their lives between places — Cyprus, the US, the Netherlands, France and the UK among others — meet for an evening of original music and standards taken somewhere unexpected.

Pianist and composer Glafkos Kontemeniotis writes with an unhurried lyricism that carries the trace of everything he has heard along the way, from Monk to the Greek songs of his childhood. He is an active New York-based pianist, arranger, and composer who has performed in well-known jazz clubs such as the Blue Note, Iridium, Birdland, and Kitano, and venues including Alice Tully Hall and Schomburg Theatre, as well as universities across the US including Yale and Princeton.

His compositions, arrangements, and piano playing are featured in various recordings including his own trio recording Progress released in 2007. Critics have praised his work with quotes like … "an under-recognized force of jazz to be reckoned with"... and "...absolutely stunning on piano..."

He is joined by Cahit Kutrafalı on electric bass, saxophonist Thomas Lumley, and Alexander Gagatsis on drums.

Expect conversation rather than display; four players thinking aloud together, in the moment, at close range.
