About Panagia Karmiotissa
Panagia Karmiotissa is the only Gothic sacred building still standing in Limassol, a former Carmelite monastery church likely linked to Peter Thomas, the Carmelite Latin Patriarch who promoted the order on Cyprus before his death in 1365. Built in the 14th century as a plain, single-nave Gothic hall with a pointed barrel vault, it survived the Ottoman capture of Limassol in 1570 and passed to Orthodox hands as a pilgrimage site by a spring believed healing. Excavations in 2018 and 2023-24 traced settlement here back to the 13th century.
