About Panagia Chrysospiliotissa Church
Panagia Chrysospiliotissa is carved into a cliff on the Pediaeos river near Kato Deftera, made up of three linked rock-cut chambers, the largest serving as the main church. Tradition holds that villagers followed a glow in the rock to a hidden icon of the Virgin, giving the site its name, "golden cave." Two tombs found inside suggest it once sheltered monks, and its sanctuary carries frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries.
