About Palaestra
This palaestra, a wrestling and exercise ground attached to an ancient gymnasium, lies within the Amathus archaeological site east of Limassol. Building work here, including a bath complex and new fortifications on the acropolis, is dated to the Ptolemaic period, around 170 to 160 BC, when Amathus's leaders still funded major construction despite the city's declining status. Its ruins sit alongside the site's better-known acropolis, agora and temple remains.
