About
The Makarios III Amphitheatre is Nicosia's grand old open-air stage, built in the 1950s in the grounds of the School for the Blind and reckoned the oldest modern amphitheatre on the island. It is a large venue by Cypriot standards, seating close to 1,600 on its stone tiers, and it has long been one of the capital's main summer stages for theatre and concerts. The Cyprus Theatre Organisation manages it, and it regularly hosts the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama, the touring programme that stages classical plays in open-air theatres across Cyprus and Greece.
